If you have DSL, sorry, you are still stuck at 150GB a month—a painfully low cap; however, if you have AT&T Uverse Internet you now have a new rate.
If you have less than 6 Mbps your monthly data cap is now 300GB, up from 250GB. If you have 12 Mbps to 75 Mbps down, you now have a data cap of 600GB, up from 250GB. If you have a download speed of 100 Mbps or higher, you now have a 1TB.
This is all in response to Comcast rolling out a 1TB data cap for all of their customers. This may still be an issue for some users, but for now it should work for most cord cutters.
The real issue may come down the road with the growth of 4K video and VR technologies. Although this may seem like a compromise to many, and will work for now, it will likely still be an issue in the long run.
Many studies have suggested that over 60% of Americans have a data cap on their home Internet service, a number that is likely to go up with Comcast’s new policy. Yet there is growing competition from new players, especially in the fiber space, that are offering a third option to many Americans that are data cap free. Although their footprint is small now, they are growing quickly as Google and others bring true competition to the home Internet market.
