AT&T Is Working on a New Streaming Service, But the Name They Want Is Already Being Used

This week AT&T started to file trademark applications for a service called “Verge TV” that looks to be a new streaming service. (Possibly the new on-demand service we know they are launching next year.) If you think the name is familiar, you are likely thinking of TheVerge.com, and they don’t seem too pleased about it.

On Thursday The Verge posted on their website that they intend to fight the trademark because they already have an existing trademark on The Verge that includes video streaming through places like their YouTube channel.

In a statement on their website, The Verge said, “Unfortunately, AT&T, we simply can’t let you have The Verge — if only because being a brand that people love and trust wouldn’t make sense to your customers. Why not try “Go90” instead? We hear it’s available.”

AT&T has their hands in a growing number of streaming services including DIRECTV NOW, AT&T Watch TV, and several smaller services including ones they have partial ownership of like Hulu. Now from the wording of the trademark, this looks like a brand-new service.

We will be keeping a close eye on this new AT&T streaming service and the fight over the name in the weeks and months to come.
