AT&T is Rolling Out 5G Foundation to More Than 100 New Markets

2018 is quickly turning into the year of 5G. Now AT&T has announced that they are launching their 5G Evolution technology in parts of 117 markets. Now AT&T offers 5G Evolution technology in  141 markets around the United States. The promise of 5G home Internet is to bring fiber Internet speeds without the cost of running fiber to each house. With 5G you will be able to get 5G Internet wirelessly to your home, which is a dream many cord cutters have had for years.

“We’re building a 5G network that will fundamentally change the way the world lives and works,” said Melissa Arnoldi, president of Technology & Operations. “5G will provide a wireless experience that is faster, more responsive and more secure for our customers.”

5G Evolution builds the foundation for 5G to launch nationwide and offers peak speeds of up to 400 megabits per second. AT&T’s Andre Fuetsch says “We’re laying the 5G network foundation with 5G Evolution and LTE-LAA. In technology terms, that means we’re upgrading cell towers with LTE Advanced features like 256 QAM, 4×4 MIMO, and 3-way carrier aggregation.  These technologies serve as the runway to 5G by boosting the existing LTE network and priming it for the future of connectivity. We can enable faster speeds now, and upgrade to 5G when it’s ready.”

AT&T customers with the latest 5G Evolution and LTE-LAA capable devices can access faster speeds and have a better experience. These devices include the Samsung Galaxy lineup – S8, S9, S8+, S9+, Note8 and S8 Active – as well as the LG V30 and Moto Z2 Force Edition.

AT&T says they  plan to make 5G Evolution technology available in over 500 markets later this year, including in parts of Baltimore; Charlotte, N.C.; Cleveland; Denver; Detroit; Jacksonville, Fla.; Kansas City; Las Vegas; New York City; Philadelphia; Portland; Raleigh; Salt Lake City; Seattle; and Washington, D.C.

Dish, Charter, AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, and others have all announced plans to roll out 5G home Internet. Dish and others have said that by the end of 2020 they will have half of the United States covered with 5G home Internet.

Verizon also announced that they plan to start rolling out 5G internet in 2018 and Charter is testing 5G in 6 markets around the United States right now.
