AT&T is Most Likely to Lose Customers After T-Mobile Sprint Merger

On April 1, T-Mobile and Sprint completed their merger, creating the “New T-Mobile.” The network promised to deliver a “transformative 5G network” including speeds up to eight times faster than current LTE and coverage for 99% of the US population within 6 years. Wireless customers took notice.

According to a new report from Waveform, AT&T stands to lose the most subscribers to the newly merged company. 28.8% of AT&T customers polled showed interest in switching to the New T-Mobile. 45.3 of Verizon customers said they were not interested in switching.

While the New T-Mobile is playing up the benefits and importance of 5G, customers aren’t necessarily motivated by 5G to switch networks. While 32.8% said they “very clearly” or “extremely clearly” understand the benefits of 5G, 65.7% of consumers said they weren’t very excited about 5G.

One factor that could be swaying customers toward the New T-Mobile is the promise to cover 99% of the US within 6 years. According to Waveform, home cell service has declined since 2018. Compared to data gathered in 2018, 11.0% fewer users reported having a “very good signal” at home. Overall, users are significantly less satisfied with their cell signal at home compared to two years ago. This new option could be the answer for some wireless customers.
