Recently AT&T announced that they would not count data usage for their DirecTV streaming service against AT&T data caps. DirecTV Now will be AT&T’s Sling TV-like streaming service that will offer live streams of many popular channels.
“You can stream DirecTV on your devices, anywhere—without using your data. Now with AT&T,” The Verge first spotted this change on the new DirecTV app.
This practice is called “zero rating” and has net neutrality supporters up in arms because they believe it brings an unfair advantage to DirecTV Now over other services such as Sling TV and PlayStation Vue.
For now DirecTV Now is expected in late 2016 or early 2017. Details are still limited, but here is what we know about the new streaming service.
DirecTV Now Will Not Be “Skinny”…
Hoping for a small inexpensive plan? You may be disappointed, because AT&T thinks large bundles are best.
“It is a rich bundle of content; it’s not a skinny bundle of content,” said John Stankey, CEO of AT&T Entertainment Group. “In fact, Stankey’s not a big fan of the skinny bundle at all. We think skinny bundles have a very small application in the market over time.”
Three Different Packages
The service will offer three packages: DirecTV Now, DirecTV Mobile, and DirecTV Preview. One package will offer an on-demand type service, one will be an online version of DirecTV, and the third is a mobile version.
Confirmed Channels
HBO, Cinemax, and Disney properties, including ESPN and Disney Channels, will be a part of the new streaming service.
