AT&T is reportedly exploring a sale of Warner Bros. Interactive, a gaming division that owns several development studios and popular franchises. CNBC reported that major studios like Electronic Arts, Activision Blizzard, and Take-Two Interactive Software are interested and the deal could be worth $4 billion.
The division is responsible for a number of popular titles and franchises both past and present. Recent hits include Mortal Kombat 11, the Lego game series, and the Hitman series. (Also, full disclosure: The writer of this post worked as a software tester on a handful of Warner Bros. titles about 10 years ago.)
Many of the franchises involved are connected to Warner’s intellectual property, like Game of Thrones or Harry Potter, and CNBC said the deal could include an agreement to allow AT&T to keep earning revenue from those series. The division was part of Time Warner (now WarnerMedia) when AT&T acquired the company back in 2018 for around $109 billion.
Neither AT&T nor any of the potential suitors have released official statements about the effort, but we’ll certainly keep an eye out for further developments.
