As Costs of NFL Resale Tickets Continue to Rise, Cord Cutters Save with Streaming

Ticket resales for the National Football League games have increased anywhere from $20 to nearly 340%, according to a report by Bookies.com. The report does a deep dive into the future of ticket resales and price increases on the secondary market.

According to the report, across all 32 NFL teams, the average ticket price is $106.21, while the average resale price on the secondary market is $252.91, which is an increase of 131%. The trajectory of the secondary market looks to continue to increase. In 2015, the resale market average was $141 and is predicted to increase to $327 by 2025, and $493 by 2030. From 2015 to 2030, as a whole, the NFL’s resale ticket market is forecasted to change by 309%.

Fans of The Black Hole in Sin City appear to be hit the hardest by secondary market ticket prices. The average face value ticket for the Las Vegas Raiders is around $153, however, on the secondary market, the average resale ticket is $673, a 339% increase. By 2030, Raiders tickets are expected to cost $1701 on the secondary market, which is a 1239% increase from their 2015 price of $127.

On the other hand, the starting QB of the Houston Texans isn’t the only person that will be happy with a pocket-friendly franchise. The Texans have the league’s lowest average ticket price of $118.07. Their average secondary market resale price is $142, which is an increase of 20%. Compared to 2015 when the resale value was $152, 2030 tickets are only expected to increase by 29% to $196 for the NFL’s youngest franchise.

Bookies.com explained their methodology as follows:

To find the average first sale tickets prices for each NFL team, Statista data was used. This was then compared to secondary market averages which were collected from ticket platform, SeatGeek. These were then compared to figure out the percentage change.

To forecast each team’s secondary market ticket prices by the year 2030, historical data was acquired from both SeatGeek and TicketIQ. This data was then used with the Excel forecast function to generate predicted secondary market ticket prices for the years 2022-2030. The final column in the table illustrates the potential percentage change over 15 years between 2015 and 2030. The teams were then ranked based on their percentage change.
