Apple to Use Original TV Shows to Push Music Subscription Sales

Some had hoped that Apples new original TV shows would be focused on taking on Netflix but it seems they are more about music sales.

Recently Edddy Cue, Apple’s SVP of Internet software and services, told Recode that Apple’s original series is “one of the differentiating factors we can add to Apple Music. He said the music service now has more than 20 million users.

Apple is also working on the release of another original, Carpool Karaoke: The Series, which will also be distributed by Apple Music.  Planet of the Apps, a series about apps and their creators features Jessica Alba, Gwyneth Paltrow, Gary Vaynerchuk, and will.i.am, and will be produced by Propagate Content chairman and co-CEO Ben Silverman, a former co-chairman of NBC Universal and Universal Media Studios, who joined Cue on-stage.

“We’re trying to do things that are unique and cultural. … We think we have a real opportunity in the TV space to do that with Apple Music and shows, and the things we’re trying to do aren’t being done by anybody else. … So yes, to the extent if we wanted to do what everybody else is doing, then you’re right, we might be better off buying somebody or doing that” he said.

“But that’s not what we’re trying to do. We are trying to do something that’s unique, takes advantage of our platforms and that really brings culture to it. … Right now, we think we can do that with partners like Ben, and we don’t see that anywhere else.”
