Apple is planning to add content using augmented reality (AR) on Apple TV+. Bloomberg reports that content using the technology will be added to the streaming service next year.
The report explains that AR will be used to add elements to a show, rather than entire episodes or series being created with AR.
In the new feature, elements of a TV show, like characters or objects, would be displayed on a viewer’s phone or tablet and integrated into the surrounding environment, according to people familiar with the project. For example, someone watching a moon-walking scene in the Apple show “For All Mankind” might be able to see a virtual lunar rover on their device’s display, seemingly perched atop their living room coffee table.
Bloomberg reports that the AR feature was set to launch on Apple TV+ this fall but was delayed. AR elements are now expected to be added next year. Sources say that the feature is related to the launch of an Apple headset “that will be built around augmented and virtual reality” in 2022.
Recently, Apple made another update in an effort to bring more subscribers to Apple TV+. The company announced its first bundle deal, an offer for CBS All Access and Showtime for $9.99 per month with an Apple TV+ subscription. Previously, Bloomberg reported that Apple is looking into additional bundle deals that will include Apple services like news and music with a service called Apple One.
