The Apple TV tvOS 10.2 Update Breaks Third Party AirPlay

This week Apple started to roll out tvOS 10.2 for their 4th Generation Apple TV. Now we are finding out that it is breaking third party apps that use AirPlay.

Why is this happening? Well Apple is now requiring the Apple TV to require device verification from AirPlay streaming devices —which can only be provided by Apple hardware. Now apps that let Windows and Android devices to AirPlay to the Apple TV will no longer work. This effects apps like Airfoil that allows Mac or Windows users to stream any audio source.

So if you want to keep access to third party Apple TV AirPlay apps do not update to 10.2.

Here are the some of the updates listed in the 10.2 update:

Discover more with TV app:

Continue watching and discover new TV shows and movies across over 40 apps, including HBO GO, USA, and Syfy.

Rentals Across Devices:

Enjoy your iTunes movie rentals across your devices. For example, rent a movie on your iPhone and watch it on your Apple TV.

Faster List Scrolling:

Navigate long lists faster by swiping along the far right side of your remote to quickly jump forward or backwards.

Remote Control from iPad

See music lyrics and playlists in the Remote app for iPhone and iPad, along with the ability to select movie chapters, audio tracks, and closed captions.
