We didn’t get a next-gen Apple TV announcement at Monday’s Apple WWDC keynote, but we did get some updates to tvOS and the company’s streaming service, Apple TV+. During Apple’s livestream, Director of Program Management for Media Products Engineering Cindy Lin boasted that the Apple TV+ service is currently available on over 1 billion TVs and other devices. And it’s adding to that total with future support on Vizio and Sony smart TVs. No solid date or specific models were announced, but Lin said we can expect the app to start showing up on Vizio and Sony devices “later this summer.”
The company also spent part of its keynote sharing a first look at an upcoming original show, Foundation, which is based on a book series by author Isaac Asimov.
The show features Jared Harris, Lee Pace, Lou Llobell, Leah Harvey and more and was produced for Apple by Skydance Television. It’s unclear how closely the show follows its source materials, but Apple’s description does include mention of a group of exiles working to preserve civilization as a Galactic Empire starts to falter.
Like the Vizio and Sony smart TV announcements, no exact release date was mentioned during the WWDC keynote, but the teaser suggests we’ll see the series debut sometime in 2021.
