Apple TV+ & Disney+ Are Putting Pressure on HBO Max to Be More Competitive

Yesterday Apple announced they will charge just $4.99 a month for Apple TV+, its new Netflix-like streaming service. Disney has announced that Disney+ would cost just $6.99 a month. (Cheaper if you prepay for a full year.)

According to reports, AT&T plans to charge $14.99 a month for HBO Max, its Netflix-like streaming service that will include content from HBO, Cinemax, and WarnerMedia channels like The CW and Cartoon Network. Though many are now questioning if people would be willing to pay more than twice what Disney+ and Apple TV+ will charge.

AT&T has been secretive about its plans for HBO Max beyond announcing that it will launch in the spring of 2020. Yet AT&T has announced that it will have a large catalog of movies and TV shows. The question now is will having a large catalog of mostly older content be enough to justify more than double the cost of other similar services?

AT&T has promised an event sometime this fall that will give more details about HBO Max, but the company is facing an uphill fight.

Disney+ and Apple TV+ will have a huge head start on HBO Max as both will release in November, five months before HBO Max is reportedly planning to launch. Being first to market has historically helped services and devices dominate the market even if they lack some features of the later service.

For now, we will have to wait and see how AT&T responds to Apple and Disney’s new streaming services.
