After a long wait, Android users can finally enjoy the Apple TV app on their devices. The app, which provides access to Apple TV+, MLS Season Pass, and a vast library of movies and shows, was released on the Google Play Store on Wednesday, February 12th. It is compatible with smartphones and tablets running Android 10 and later.
This launch marks a significant milestone for Apple, which has traditionally limited its services to its own ecosystem. The move to Android opens up Apple TV to a much wider audience, potentially boosting subscriptions and expanding its reach in the competitive streaming market.
Android users can now subscribe to Apple TV+ for $9.99 per month and MLS Season Pass for $14.99 per month or $99 per season using their Google Play accounts. The app offers key features like “Continue Watching” and “Watchlist,” allowing users to seamlessly pick up where they left off across devices. Content can be streamed over Wi-Fi or cellular connections, and downloaded for offline viewing.
While the app boasts a user-friendly interface designed specifically for Android, it currently lacks the ability to cast from a mobile device to connected TVs. It remains unclear why it took Apple so long to release a native Android app, especially considering the existence of an Apple Music app for Android since 2015 and a Chromecast with Google TV version of the Apple TV app since 2021.
The Apple TV app on Android offers more than just access to Apple TV+. Users can also buy or rent new movie releases and browse a catalog of over 100,000 movies and shows. The app also allows for subscriptions to Paramount+, Starz, and AMC+, and enables users to search for content from over 100 streaming apps, including Disney+, Hulu, Max, Prime Video, and Peacock.
Apple TV+ itself features a growing library of original series, films, documentaries, and children’s programming. Popular titles include “Ted Lasso,” “Severance,” “The Morning Show,” and the Oscar-winning film “CODA.” The service also offers “Friday Night Baseball,” a weekly MLB doubleheader.
MLS Season Pass provides comprehensive coverage of Major League Soccer, including live matches, playoffs, and Leagues Cup. New for 2025, Apple TV+ subscribers can also enjoy “Sunday Night Soccer,” a weekly primetime MLS match.
The arrival of the Apple TV app on Android is a significant development in the streaming landscape, expanding access to Apple’s content and services for millions of users. It will be interesting to see how this move impacts the streaming wars and whether it will drive further adoption of Apple TV+.
