Apple is reportedly gearing up to launch a new HomePod Mini and Apple TV in 2025, featuring a custom-designed chip that combines Bluetooth and Wi-Fi functionality. This move, reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, signifies Apple’s ongoing efforts to reduce its reliance on external suppliers and gain greater control over its hardware and software ecosystem.

The new chip, codenamed “Proxima,” has been in development for several years and will be produced by TSMC, the same manufacturer responsible for Apple’s powerful Apple Silicon chips. This transition marks a significant step for Apple, as it gradually reduces its dependence on Broadcom, a long-time supplier of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi components for various Apple devices.

A Strategic Shift

By designing its own combined Bluetooth and Wi-Fi chip, Apple aims to:

HomePod Mini and Apple TV Refresh

While Gurman did not specify the exact launch date for the new HomePod Mini and Apple TV, he suggested that they could debut sometime in 2025. These updated devices are expected to feature the new “Proxima” chip, potentially offering improved connectivity and performance.

Expansion to Other Devices

The “Proxima” chip is also expected to make its way into iPhones later in 2025 and eventually into iPads and Macs in 2026. This gradual rollout reflects Apple’s strategic approach to transitioning its devices to its own custom-designed components.

Apple’s Growing Home Focus

The launch of new home products aligns with Apple’s broader push into the smart home market. Gurman also reported that Apple is working on a standalone security camera and a wall-mounted smart display designed to control smart home devices. These initiatives suggest that Apple is investing heavily in expanding its presence in the home and creating a more integrated ecosystem of devices and services.

Looking Ahead

Apple’s move to design its own Bluetooth and Wi-Fi chip underscores its commitment to innovation and its desire to control key components of its hardware ecosystem. As the company continues to expand its product lineup and push into new markets like the smart home, its custom-designed chips will likely play a crucial role in delivering a seamless and integrated user experience.
