Apple Has Quietly Discontinued the Third-Gen Apple TV

This should not come as a surprise but Apple has finally discontinued the 4-year-old third-generation Apple TV. The third-gen Apple TV was one of the oldest streaming players still sold in stores and was seen as a less expensive option for people who wanted access to their iTunes library on their TV.

In recent months it has been increasingly difficult to find the third-gen Apple TV in stores. Rumors have also been flying since last summer that Apple was just waiting for the existing stock of third-gen Apple TVs to sell. It seems that now, almost a year after the fourth-gen Apple TV hit the market, that Apple has finally sold their stock of third-gen Apple TVs.

It is really no surprise that the older Apple TVs were hard to sell. They lacked the Apple App Store and had just a fraction of the apps of even the fourth-gen Apple TV; however, they still cost more than a Roku Stick, Roku 1, and the average price of the Roku 2 on Amazon.

This change in the Apple lineup and recent price drops of fourth-gen Apple TVs have fueled rumors of a new fifth-gen Apple TV. We still think it is unlikely that Apple will release a new Apple TV one year after the current Apple TV but the chances of a new Apple TV are increasing.
