According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, Apple will put originals in theaters with a several week exclusivity period before streaming them in order to qualify for awards season.
This move will help Apple to bring in top directors and producers who may want to work with the streaming service but won’t want to miss out on the opportunity earn awards for their work. Only those films that show in theaters in specific areas qualify for major awards.
Apple will reportedly start with their first film, The Elephant Queen, which is scheduled to be available to stream on Apple TV+ at launch. WSJ reports that the film will start out in theaters before Apple TV+ launches on November 1.
Apple TV+ won’t be the first streaming service to sent content to theaters ahead of streaming to be in the running for awards. Last month, we reported that Netflix will do the very same, releasing 10 films in theaters before streaming them.
