Apple is Reportedly Working on Building a Internet Service

Today Bloomberg reported that Apple has a team of engineers working on building an internet service. According to the report, a dozen engineers from aerospace, satellite, and antenna design industries are working on the project to beam data from space down to Apple devices. Apple reportedly plans to start offering the service within five years.

According to Bloomberg, the project could let Apple beam data down to their devices offering a internet service, limiting the need for a wireless carrier and help offer more precise data. Bloomberg says that Apple is not necessarily trying to follow in Amazon or SpaceX’s steps by offering high-speed internet from space. It is possible that Apple will be using ground base stations to take data from existing satellites in space. Apple may have not ruled out launching their own satellites as it does have a “special project” underway related to satellite technology.

Recently, Apple started to hire executives from the aerospace and wireless data delivery fields. Apple has also been working on building up the team of engineers with experience in designing components for communication equipment. The new members of the team also reportedly include Matt Ettus, who has experience in the wireless industry.

Apple is not alone in its rush to offer internet service. Amazon and SpaceX are both rushing to build a internet service.  The question now is who will follow through and launch their service first.
