Apple Confirms New Details About Their New Apple TV 5th Gen

For some time now we have heard rumors that a new Apple TV is on its way. Then about a week ago Apple started to update movie sales to include 4K HDR versions; however, there are no Apple devices that let you download a 4K movie. Many pointed to this as a sign that the new 4K Apple TV would come out this fall.

Now, thanks to Apple’s own Homepod Speak, we can confirm that a new Apple TV with 4K HDR support is on its way.

Over the weekend iOS developer Guiherme Rambo Tweeted that he had spotted code inside the iOS powering the Homepod that refers to an Apple TV capable of supporting 4K with Dolby Vision premium HDR.

Currently only Roku offers 4K Dolby Vision premium HDR so that would be a huge upgrade from current Apple TV Fourth Gen that only supports HD. This is a badly needed update to the Apple TV because both Roku and the Fire TV have offered 4K support for years now.

4K players about to become even more important as DIRECTV NOW has announced plans to offer 4K stream and PlayStation Vue is thinking about it.

The Apple TV recently has been stuck in fourth place behind Roku, Fire TV, and Chromecast in sales in the United States. Apple seems to be hoping that adding in 4K Dolby Vision will help the Apple TV gain lost market share; however, will adding something Roku has offered for almost a year now help them regain market share.
