In a move rumored in recent weeks, Apple has indeed announced a new version of its Apple TV 4K streaming device. This new version boasts an updated CPU compared to the second-gen model that was announced just last year.
The company is offering two versions, starting at $129 for a WiFi-only model with 64GB of onboard storage. Users looking for wired networking and more storage can opt for the $149 model that offers Gigabit Ethernet and 128GB of storage.
As for specs, this latest release adds HDR10+ — previous generations of the 4K line supported standard HDR10 and Dolby Vision. The CPU jumps from the earlier model’s A12 to the more recent A15 processor, which made its debut in last year’s iPhone 13 line and sixth-generation iPad mini, and is still used in this year’s non-Pro iPhone 14 options.
In a press release, Apple said the new processor is up to 50 percent faster, with graphics seeing up to a 30 percent boost. Meanwhile, the included Siri Remote retains the design that was introduced last year, but switches from a Lightning port to USB-C for charging.
As for the older, non-4K Apple TVs, it looks like those models are officially off the table. The Apple TV product page currently focuses solely on these newly announced models and the company’s official store no longer lists the 2015-era HD as available for sale.
The new Apple TV 4K is up for preordering starting today, with a release scheduled for Nov. 4.
