The new year has brought a frustrating surprise for Optimum cable subscribers: a blackout of MSG Networks, leaving many sports fans unable to watch their beloved local teams. The carriage dispute between Optimum and MSG Networks, which carries the New York Knicks, Rangers, Islanders, Devils, and Buffalo Sabres, reached an impasse after their agreement expired at midnight on December 31st, 2024.
Optimum is placing the blame squarely on MSG Networks, accusing the broadcaster of employing “anti-consumer” tactics and demanding exorbitant fees that would inevitably lead to higher cable bills for all subscribers, regardless of whether they watch MSG Networks’ programming.
Update: In a statement to Cord Cutters News MSG Networks said “As a last-ditch effort to save their struggling business at the expense of subscribers, Altice is trying to charge their customers more and give them less. They just raised prices – nearly 50% for current Optimum subscribers and 70% for new Optimum subscribers (after expiration of a promotional offer) for the package that had included MSG Networks – and cut access to the Knicks, Rangers, Islanders, Devils and more on MSG Networks. We offered Altice a number of fair and reasonable proposals that called for Altice to pay us less than last year. Altice rejected all of them, including our offer to keep MSG Networks on the air while we continued to try to reach a deal. We remain ready to negotiate in good faith.”
“Unfair and Unsustainable” Demands:
In a strongly worded statement, Optimum outlined its grievances, highlighting MSG Networks’ insistence on an “all or nothing” approach that would force all subscribers to pay for channels they may not want.
“The problem: MSG Networks demanded that we pay an exorbitant amount in fees to be able to carry its content AND that customers who don’t want the content – who are the majority – have to pay for it anyway,” the statement read.
Optimum claims that it attempted to negotiate a more flexible package that would allow customers to choose whether or not to subscribe to MSG Networks, but the broadcaster refused. The cable provider also pointed to the availability of alternative viewing options, such as the direct-to-consumer MSG+ streaming app, as a reason why forcing all subscribers to pay for the channels is unreasonable.
A Broken Model in a Changing Landscape:
Optimum further criticized MSG Networks’ business model, arguing that it is outdated and unsustainable in today’s fragmented media landscape.
“It is no secret that viewership for Regional Sports Networks has become increasingly fragmented across countless streaming platforms and services,” the statement continued. “Yet MSG Networks continues to squeeze its viewers for more money to watch their content, refusing to evolve or deviate from a broken model that is outdated based on the evolution of the entertainment industry, is anti-consumer, and unsustainable in today’s programming landscape.”
Impact on Customers and Alternative Options:
This blackout has left many Optimum subscribers frustrated and disappointed, particularly those who are avid fans of the local sports teams carried by MSG Networks. However, Optimum assures customers that it is working to provide alternative viewing options and support.
“Optimum is working directly with customers to provide alternate viewing options to ensure that they never have to miss a game,” the statement assured. The company encourages customers to contact them directly to explore these options.
A Call for Fairness and Flexibility:
Optimum’s statement concluded with a call for MSG Networks to adopt a more customer-centric approach and engage in fair negotiations that prioritize choice and affordability.
“Optimum wants to partner with programmers who put customer choice and flexibility at the center of every decision,” the statement emphasized. “We are disappointed in MSG Networks, but most importantly, sorry that our customers have to experience this change.”
As the blackout continues, it remains to be seen whether the two companies can find common ground and reach a resolution that satisfies both their business interests and the needs of Optimum’s customers. In the meantime, sports fans are left hoping that their access to their favorite teams will be restored soon.
