GCI, Alaska’s largest telecommunications provider, has announced it will be discontinuing its traditional cable TV service in mid-2025. Recognizing the growing trend of cord-cutting and the increasing popularity of online streaming, GCI has announced that it will transition its remaining cable subscribers to streaming options, partnering with Xumo, the joint venture between Comcast and Charter Communications.
In a letter to subscribers, GCI acknowledged the shift in consumer preferences, stating that “customers increasingly choose online video streaming as their preferred way to watch their favorite programming.” The company emphasized its commitment to providing “the best Internet and mobile data experience in Alaska” as it focuses on its core strengths in broadband and mobile services.
This decision follows a similar move by Ketchikan Public Utilities in September, highlighting the ongoing decline of traditional cable television in Alaska.
Embracing Streaming with Xumo
GCI is partnering with Xumo to offer its internet customers the Xumo Stream Box, a 4K streaming device powered by Comcast’s Entertainment OS. This device provides access to hundreds of streaming apps and services, including live TV streaming options like YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, and Sling TV, as well as popular on-demand platforms like Netflix, Disney+, and Max.
“We’re excited to bring the Xumo Stream Box to GCI customers as we head into the heart of the holiday season,” said GCI Chief Marketing Officer Kate Slyker. “With this new device, customers can have access to hundreds of free channels, as well as a very easy-to-use remote, making it easier than ever to find and watch their favorite programming.”
Key Features of the Xumo Stream Box
- Extensive Content Library: Access to hundreds of streaming apps and services, including live TV streaming options and on-demand platforms.
- Voice Search: Find content quickly and easily with the included voice remote.
- Personalized Viewing: Create personalized viewing lists for each family member.

GCI’s Strategic Shift
GCI’s decision to discontinue its cable TV service and embrace streaming through its partnership with Xumo reflects a strategic shift in the company’s focus. By prioritizing its broadband internet offerings and partnering with a leading streaming platform, GCI aims to provide its customers with a modern and flexible entertainment solution while adapting to the evolving media landscape.
This move signifies a significant step in the transition from traditional cable TV to online streaming, with GCI leading the way in Alaska.
