Your phone probably gets scam texts every week, from fake delivery notices, account alerts, payment warnings, and messages pretending to be from companies you trust. The hardest part is that scammers only need one person to tap the wrong link for their message to work.
Now Android users have a new tool designed to catch those suspicious messages before they become a bigger problem.
NordVPN has launched Message Protection for Android, a new feature that automatically scans incoming SMS messages from unknown senders and warns users when a text looks suspicious. The feature checks messages using phone reputation data, URL analysis, and content categorization to identify potential scams.
In recent years, scam texts have become one of the easiest ways for criminals to reach millions of people. According to GASA’s 2025 Global State of Scams report, text messages are one of the most common channels used by scammers, with billions of people encountering scams each year. The report says seven in 10 adults globally encountered a scam in the last 12 months, and 13% said they run into one at least once a day. FTC data found that losses from text scams reached $639 million in 2025, a massive 36% increase from 2024.
What to Know About Nord VPN’s Message Protection for Android
NordVPN’s new tool is aimed at the kind of message most people are tempted to tap first and think about later.
When NordVPN detects a risky message, users receive a notification explaining the possible threat and what they should do next. Suspicious messages can also be opened inside a safe view within the NordVPN app, helping prevent accidental taps on dangerous links.
Message Protection runs in the background and continues working even when the VPN is turned off. The feature joins Call Protection inside the NordVPN app, giving users one place to manage protection against suspicious calls and messages. NordVPN also says it does not store the content of calls or SMS messages.
“Text messages have always been one of the easiest ways for scammers to reach people at scale, and the numbers show the problem is only getting worse. You get a text, you read it, you tap a link, and that’s often all it takes,” says Domininkas Virbickas, product director at NordVPN. “Message protection is about breaking that chain before it starts.”
Right now, NordVPN is offering a deal for new customers with 75% off plus three extra months, bringing plans down to a lower monthly price while including features like Message Protection. The company also includes a 30-day money-back guarantee.
NordVPN Continues to Expand Security Suite
While NordVPN became popular as a VPN service, the company has expanded into a broader online security platform with tools designed to help protect against phishing, malware, trackers, and scams.
NordVPN is also testing another security tool called Prompt Guard, a browser extension designed to warn users before they accidentally share sensitive information with AI tools. The extension can detect information like passwords, API keys, credit card numbers, and other sensitive data before it is submitted. It can warn or block prompts and file uploads, works on devices locally, and currently supports platforms including ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Nexos AI.
For Android users, Message Protection is another layer of defense against a problem that keeps growing. Scam texts are not disappearing, and having a tool that can flag suspicious messages before you click could make a big difference.
