More security risks are being added to the list of apps available to Android users. Recently, two popular file management apps downloaded by around 1.5 million Android users are stealthily skimming personal information without the user’s consent or knowledge.

The apps File Recovery & Data Recovery and File Manager are the latest to be found stealing personal data. The apps don’t disclose it collects data from users; it simply launches without permission to collect and send private information to “servers based in China” reports Tom’s Guide

The app has been found to send private information to third parties, although File Recovery & Data Recovery and the File Manager apps both state they do not collect any data from devices.

Information including contacts, email, social media contacts, pictures, audio files, video files, user location, mobile country code, network provider name, operating system version numbers, and even your device’s brand and model is swiped by the app. Users do not have the option to decline or alter what information is acquired. The app doesn’t ask for permissions, it just quietly runs while the user is unaware their personal information is being collected and given away.

The app runs in the background and isn’t featured on a device’s home screen. To delete the app, which is strongly suggested, go to your app screen. Find the File Manager in your app settings section and delete it. Restart your phone and verify the app has been removed.

There are multiple file managing apps available through the Google Play Store. Do not download anything from app creator Wang Tom. Google has already deleted his File Management app from the store, but keep an eye out just in case another has taken its place.

While you’re deleting these apps, take a look at all the apps you’ve downloaded to your phone and remove anything you don’t use. It’s highly recommended to download an antivirus app to your device to add extra protection against stealth apps secretly swiping your data.
