Android TV’s Newest Box, MI, is Coming Soon

Back at Google I/O in May Google announced a new streaming media player from Xiaomi called MI, which is now expected to hit stories as soon as October, according to a source and reported by TechCrunch.

The MI is expected to cost less than $100 and is capable of streaming 4K video at 60 FPS with support for Dolby Digital Plus audio playback. In addition, there’s HDMI 2.0a compatibility, a quad-core ARM processor, Mali 450 GPU and 2GB of RAM, and 8GB of storage. The MI is expected to even come with a controller for playing Android games on your TV.

Xiaomi is a Chinese smart phone company that is looking to expand into new markets, especially the United States.

The MI is the long-awaited new Android TV box that is backed by Google. Android TV is the successor to Google’s Google TV service. Whereas the platform is still fairly new, there has been concern over its future because the flagship player, the Nexus Player, has been heavily discounted and discontinued at many stores. Other manufacturers have seemed to cut back support but others, such as the Nvidia Shield, have seemed to double down on their support.

No official date has been announced by Xiaomi or Google, but TechCrunch seems confidant that the player will hit the market in the fourth quarter 2016.
