remote pointing at tvAccording to a report from DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group, consumers spent $25.2 billion on home entertainment in 2019. That’s up 8.4% from 2018. It’s estimated that $15.9 billion of that was spent on subscription streaming, making up 63% of the total.

Digital movie sales made up around $2.6 billion of the total, up 5.1% and digital movie rentals were up 9% from 2018. DEG says “consumers’ continued engagement with VOD, increasingly through internet services,” led to those increased numbers.

Purchasing content in both digital and physical forms, including Blu-Ray, DVDs, 4K UHD, and digital totaled $5.9 billion, with physical disc sales down 18.2% from 2018.

Renting content overall also decreased by 12.3% with physical disc rentals down 19.5%. DEG attributes the decline to the shift away from traditional pay TV. Netflix’s disc rental service made an estimated $301.2 million, compared to $250 million made by what’s left of traditional video rental stores around the country. Redbox topped the disc rental kiosk market, bringing in an estimated $884.6 million.
