Americans Aren’t Watching Live TV, Study Shows

Is live TV becoming a thing of the past? We’re trending that way, according to a new study from New York-based research firm Attest’s 6th annual US Media Consumption Report.

The report shows that 28% of consumers sat they don’t want any live TV on an average day, an increase of 4% from last year and 8% from 2023. Younger audiences, those under 30, are the least likely to tune in to live TV, with 41% saying they don’t watch on an average day.

When it comes to watching content with streaming services, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are on the rise. 64% of those surveyed said they watch Netflix at least once a week. 49% say they watch Prime Video.

When asked about what they’re watching on TV, crime dramas and procedurals were a common response, including shows like Reacher, NCIS, Chicago Fire, and Chicago PD.

Sports continue to be the major draw for live TV viewers. Nielsen reported earlier this year that Super Bowl LIX saw an estimated 127.7 million viewers on Sunday, February 9. The game aired on Fox, but also streamed for free on Tubi. As content becomes increasingly easy to find on-demand across streaming services, we’re likely to continue to see the decline in live TV viewing with the exception of major events, like the Super Bowl.
