The largest movie theater chain in the world is getting into the world of streaming with the service that The New York Times described as “an iTunes-style online video store” where users can rent and buy titles. The platform will have around 2,000 films that will be available after leaving theaters. Prices will reportedly range from $3 to $6 to rent and $10 to $20 to buy.
To use AMC Theaters On Demand, you’ll need an AMC Stubs account. If you don’t have an account already, it’s free to sign up. You’ll be able to watch movies you rent or purchase on LG Smart TVs, Windows or Mac computers, Android or iOS mobile and tablet devices and Roku devices.
AMC has made deals with Disney, Warner Bros., Universal, Sony and Paramount to make new releases available.
“For us, it’s all upside,” said Ron Sanders, president of worldwide distribution and home entertainment at Warner. “Most of our other big digital partners are focused on multiple categories — music, books. The great thing about AMC is that movies are the whole focus.”
Adam Aron, AMC’s president and chief executive, calls this a “growth opportunity” for the theater chain and looks at streaming as another way to expand the business while keeping loyal customers.
Aron was also in charge when AMC made other major decisions, including adding Dolby sound and projection to theaters, switching to comfortable recliner seating, serving alcohol at select theaters, and expanding menus in over 600 theaters. AMC also introduced the AMC Stubs A-List ticket subscription service.
