AMC Is Launching a MoviePass Competitor

Yesterday, AMC announced that they will be launching a MoviePass competitor called AMC Stubs A-List.

With AMC’s service, you will be able to see three movies per week for $19.95 a month. While that costs more than MoviePass, AMC’s program does offer some features MoviePass does not. The main attraction is that AMC will let you see premium-format movies like IMAX, Dolby Cinema, and RealID. MoviePass only allows you to see standard 2D movies.

AMC is trying to find ways to offset a 22% decline in attendance since 2002. Over the last 15+ years, movie ticket prices have increased by 54%.

There are a few downsides to AMC’s service. One of the main ones being a use it or lose it rule that does not let you carry over any unused tickets from one week to the next; however, you can use all three of your tickets on the same day if you want. Currently, MoviePass limits you to one movie a day.

Maybe the main selling point of AMC’s service is the ability to reserve advance tickets. MoviePass limits you to same-day ticket purchases.
