Amazon’s IMDb, the premier source for movie, TV, and celebrity information, today announced a shift in its leadership. Founder and long-time CEO Col Needham has transitioned into the role of Founder & Executive Chair, with Nikki Santoro, who has been the Chief Operating Officer since 2021, stepping up to become the new Chief Executive Officer. This change marks a significant milestone as Santoro becomes the first woman to lead IMDb in its 35-year history.
In his new capacity as Founder & Executive Chair, Needham will focus on strategic oversight, providing guidance on key initiatives, and acting as a global ambassador for IMDb. His journey began in 1990 when he founded the company, transforming it into the authoritative entertainment database it is today. Despite stepping down as CEO, Needham will continue his involvement from the Bristol office, also maintaining his positions on the boards of Into Film and Film Independent, and as a Global Brand Ambassador for the British Board of Film Classification.
Needham commented on the transition, “After founding IMDb and serving as CEO for 35 years, I’ve decided to move into my new role as Founder & Executive Chair, handing over the leadership to Nikki Santoro. Nikki’s strategic vision and profound understanding of our business make her the perfect leader to steer IMDb into its next phase.”
Nikki Santoro expressed her enthusiasm for the new role, stating, “Taking on the CEO position at IMDb is both an immense honor and a thrilling challenge. I am dedicated to leading our global team to further elevate IMDb as the go-to entertainment resource, connecting audiences worldwide with their favorite content and providing invaluable tools for industry professionals. As we navigate through the evolving realms of technology and entertainment, IMDb will continue to lead with innovation.”
Santoro has been with IMDb since 2016, bringing a wealth of experience in product development and technology from her previous roles at Amazon, Microsoft, and The Weather Channel. Her tenure as COO saw significant growth in IMDb’s business areas, including advertising, content enhancement, and product innovation. Her leadership has been crucial in expanding IMDb’s database, improving IMDbPro for professionals, and integrating new technologies to serve a global audience of hundreds of millions.
This leadership change coincides with IMDb’s 35th anniversary, highlighting the company’s resilience and adaptability in the fast-evolving entertainment industry. Under Santoro’s guidance, IMDb plans to continue its focus on database enhancement, expansion of its advertising and membership services, and the strategic use of emerging technologies to deliver superior entertainment insights.
To celebrate this new chapter and the leadership transition, IMDb will host an industry dinner in Park City, Utah, on January 27. This event will serve as a platform to strengthen industry ties and underscore IMDb’s commitment to advancing the digital entertainment landscape.
As IMDb moves forward, it remains committed to its mission of providing comprehensive entertainment information, supporting career growth within the industry, and offering innovative advertising solutions, all while adapting to the dynamic digital environment.
