Amazon’s Grandfathered Twitch Roku Channel Will Shutdown in September

Back in November of 2017 Amazon removed their official Twitch streaming Roku Channel from Roku players. Any Roku owner who already had the Twitch Channel installed on their Roku at the time got a warning message saying the app will no longer be updated but that they can still use it. Sadly new Roku owners would be unable to add the official Amazon Twitch channel now though that is changing.

Recently Twitch announced plans to end support for what they call “v3 endpoints” as they move to the v5 version. Sadly the Twitch Roku Channel runs on v3 and Twitch has not announced plans to release an updated Twitch Roku Channel running on version 5. This means on September 12th at 11 AM Pacific the current grandfathered Twitch Roku Channel will shut down. Now if you want to stream Twitch on your big TV you will need a Fire TV or Android TV device. (Or use AirPlay for the Apple TV.)

This change is part of our continued effort to improve developer products which enable creators like yourself to deliver the interactive experiences that make Twitch what it is today.” Twitch said in a statement on its developer blog.

Here are the dates you need to know:

• September 5 – 24 hour shutdown starting at 11:00am Pacific
• September 12 – Permanent shutdown starting at 11:00am Pacific
