Amazon is taking its delivery innovation to the next level with a new project aimed at streamlining the “last 100 yards” of a package’s journey. The e-commerce giant is developing smart glasses for its delivery drivers, equipped with navigation technology to guide them to, around, and within buildings, according to sources familiar with the matter to Reuters.
These glasses, codenamed “Amelia,” would provide turn-by-turn directions on a small embedded screen, helping drivers navigate complex routes, locate packages within delivery vans, and even maneuver around obstacles like gates or pets. By freeing drivers from handheld GPS devices, the glasses could also allow them to carry more packages and increase efficiency.
This initiative underscores Amazon’s commitment to optimizing its delivery network and reducing costs amidst growing competition from rivals like Walmart. The company has already invested heavily in its own delivery infrastructure, including planes, trucks, and warehouses. Now, it’s focusing on the finer details of the delivery process to shave valuable seconds off each stop.
The glasses are reportedly inspired by Amazon’s existing Echo Frames, which allow users to interact with the Alexa virtual assistant. However, the delivery glasses face several technical hurdles, including battery life and the need to gather comprehensive location data.
Amazon also needs to address potential concerns from drivers about comfort, distraction, and appearance. While some drivers may be hesitant to adopt the new technology, Amazon could make wearing the glasses a requirement for its contracted delivery partners.
If successful, this innovation could significantly impact the last-mile delivery landscape and further solidify Amazon’s dominance in the e-commerce market.
