Amazon Video & Woody Allen are Working on a New Movie Deal

woodyallenAmazon and Woody Allen are working on expanding their relationship with a new movie deal after the successful Cafe Society.

The Amazon-Allen collaboration is off to a promising start after a strong debut by Cafe Society. While only screened in five theaters this past weekend, the film pulled in close to $360,000 or an average of roughly $72,000 per theater according to Box Office Mojo. Amazon bought the U.S. rights to the film for $15 million in February, partnering with Lionsgate to distribute the film to theaters.

Amazon, paid at least $15 million and possibly up to $20 million for distribution rights toCafé Society in February, also has a TV project in the works with Allen: an untitled Prime series in which he stars with Miley Cyrus and Elaine May.

In just a few short years, Amazon has begun to be a big name as a studio aiming to both finance and distribute movies in the $20 million-$40 million range. Allen’s latest would join Todd Haynes’ Wonderstuck as a prestige homegrown title for the company, which already has shown muscle in the acquisitions space at festivals, nabbing such in-demand films as Manchester by the Sea at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

Jeff Bezos seems to not only want in on the production but is taking a bit of a role in front of the camera too. On Monday it was revealed that CEO Jeff Bezos will have a cameo in Star Trek Beyond which is set to hit theaters this weekend.
