Amazon Video Wants to Be Your Source for Live Sports

Diverse mix of friends sports fans watching winning football match on TV at home Celebrating winning goal huddled on couch shouting excited sharing snacks drinking beerAccording to Bloomberg, Amazon.com Inc. is going after sports streaming rights—from basketball to rugby and everything in between. According to their sources it sounds like the French Open tennis championship and professional rugby will be the first live sports to hit Amazon Prime Video.

Amazon has its eyes on even more sports with basketball and baseball being their main goals; however, they are in talks about other sports such as golf, soccer, and auto racing. One source told Bloomberg that you could sign up for alerts when your sports teams are on. For example, if you are watching a movie on Amazon an alert will pop up or Alexa will alert you to the beginning of the game.

Back in May 2016 former YouTube executive Charlie Neiman joined Amazon to focus on sports partnerships and business development according to his LinkedIn page. He faces an uphill battle as companies such as Walt Disney’s ESPN pays almost $2 billion a year for just the NFL Monday night games.

Although the battle may be uphill for Amazon Video they have deep pockets and see sports as a possible way to stand out against Netflix and Hulu. Amazon likely also see live sports as a way to sell more sports related merchandise.
