One of the main limitations of the Apple TV is the lack of an Amazon Video app. Now it is being reported that you may soon be getting an Amazon Video app on the Apple TV.
Sources close to the deal have told BuzzFeed News that Amazon’s Prime Video app will be added to the Apple TV. Apple plans to announce Amazon Prime Video’s impending arrival to the Apple TV App Store during the keynote at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 5 in San Jose, California. A source familiar with the company’s thinking say the app is expected to go live this summer, but cautioned that the hard launch date may change. Amazon had previously declined to even submit a Prime Video app for inclusion in Apple’s Apple TV App Store, despite Apple’s “all are welcome” proclamations.
The wording of the news leaves it open that this may not be a full-featured Amazon Video app and may only stream Prime content. The main hold up for Amazon has been Apple’s refusal to allow its third-party video store on its Apple TV without giving Apple a cut of every sale. Not an easy thing for a company such as Amazon to do when it is trying to sell shows for $1.99 and make a profit.
Amazon has made a special version of its video app without the store in the past; however, reports are the sales from that app were disappointing. Sources have said because of the poor sales from the iOS app, Amazon decided to never make a video app without its store again.
If this is real the question is who will blink. Will Apple give Amazon a special deal to have a store on the Apple TV, or will Amazon make a limited version of its app. Both companies have reasons to blink. Amazon is always looking for new subscribers, and Apple has had disappointing sales of the Apple TV.
