Amazon Video for the Apple TV May Be Delayed

Back in June Apple announced that Amazon would be releasing an Amazon Video app for the Apple TV sometime this summer. Now reports are coming in that development may be delayed.

According to Recode, which has a history of great sources inside Amazon and Apple, the development of the app may not be ready in time for the September 12, 2017, event. No official word has come, but it is now an open question if Amazon will make its goal of releasing an Amazon app before the start of the fall.

It is still possible that Apple will demo an Amazon Video app at the September 12, 2017, announcement of the 5th gen Apple TV; however, reports are it won’t be ready for the general public on that day.

Amazon and Apple fought for years over Amazon’s desire to offer a video store on the Apple TV. The main sticking point was the Apple commission structure that took a cut of all sales on the Apple TV. Back in May Apple announced that it would be willing to cut commission for some affiliates.

Amazon in recent years has been unwilling to release apps for devices that would take a cut of its sales. This was a change to its prior policy of just releasing a limited version of its video app that would stream shows and movies but not allow you to purchase them.

According to reports Amazon was disappointed with the sales from its iOS video app and it led to the change in policy. This led to a public fight with Apple and Google that led to the Apple TV and Google Chromecast being removed from the Amazon store.

Now it looks like Amazon has had a change in heart and will release an app on the Apple TV. Why things changed we do not know. It could be the recent reduction in the commission cut Apple takes or it could have to do with Amazon’s deal to stream NFL games.

For now it’s all speculation, but what we do know is a new Apple TV Amazon app is on its way.
