In a seismic shift for one of cinema’s most enduring franchises, Amazon MGM Studios announced on Thursday that it will assume creative control of the James Bond series, a move that has sent ripples of shock—and perhaps a stir—through the entertainment industry. The announcement coincided with news that Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, the long-time producers and guardians of the 007 legacy, are stepping back from their roles.
Under the terms of this groundbreaking arrangement, Amazon MGM Studios has partnered with Wilson and Broccoli to form a new joint venture that will hold the intellectual property rights to the James Bond franchise according to a report from Variety. While all three parties remain co-owners of the iconic spy series, Amazon MGM Studios will now steer the creative direction of future Bond projects, marking a significant departure from decades of tradition.
“Since his theatrical introduction over 60 years ago, James Bond has been one of the most iconic characters in filmed entertainment,” said Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios. “We are grateful to the late Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman for bringing James Bond to movie theatres around the world, and to Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli for their unyielding dedication and their role in continuing the legacy of the franchise that is cherished by legions of fans worldwide. We are honored to continue this treasured heritage and look forward to ushering in the next phase of the legendary 007 for audiences around the world.”
Broccoli echoed her stepbrother’s sentiments, adding, “My life has been dedicated to maintaining and building upon the extraordinary legacy that was handed to Michael and me by our father, producer Cubby Broccoli. I have had the honor of working closely with four of the tremendously talented actors who have played 007 and thousands of wonderful artists within the industry. With the conclusion of ‘No Time to Die’ and Michael retiring from the films, I feel it is time to focus on my other projects.”
The transition follows Amazon’s 2022 acquisition of MGM, which brought a vast library—including the James Bond catalog—under its umbrella. While Amazon has held distribution rights to all 25 Bond films since the purchase, this new deal hands them the reins to shape the franchise’s future. The most recent entry, “No Time to Die,” marked Daniel Craig’s final portrayal of 007 and grossed $775 million globally in 2021. Since then, speculation about the next Bond film and Craig’s successor has swirled, though no official timeline has emerged.
This handover signals a new era for the suave superspy, with Amazon MGM Studios poised to redefine the franchise’s trajectory while honoring its storied past. Fans and industry watchers alike await details on what’s next for 007, from casting to creative vision, as the martini glass passes to a new set of hands.
