This week Amazon quietly shut down Anime Strike, their anime streaming service that was part of Amazon Channels. Anime Strike was a $5 a month service that you could add to your Amazon Prime membership as part of Amazon’s Channels service.
According to Amazon, the content currently on Anime Strike is being moved to Prime Video for Prime subscribers. Subscribers to Anime Strike will still have access to their content through their Prime subscription. (You needed a Prime subscription before you could subscribe to Anime Strike.)
Anime fans still have several great options for streaming as Crunchyroll and Funimation currently dominate the anime streaming market. Other streaming services like Hulu, Netflix, and even free services such as Tubi and Crackle have also added a growing catalog of anime content.
With the growing competition, it seems that Amazon has decided the Anime Strike Channel was not worth the struggle to find subscribers.
Will Amazon continue to buy rights to anime shows for Prime or will they just let the current contracts run out and not renew them or find new contracts?
