Amazon Shipped Over 9 Billion Items Same Day or Next Day in 2024

Amazon has released data highlighting the significant savings customers achieve through Prime memberships and detailed several recent innovations designed to improve the shopping and delivery experience. The company emphasizes its commitment to speed, selection, and value for its customers, while also noting its focus on employee experience and sustainability goals.

Amazon reports achieving its fastest delivery speeds ever, attributing this to ongoing investments in logistics and delivery infrastructure. The company has implemented strategies such as dividing its operations into smaller regions and stocking products locally to reduce travel distances and improve efficiency. This focus on speed extends to an expanded selection of “everyday essentials” – household and pantry items – with over two billion of these items arriving same or next day in the U.S. last year, a 50% increase year-over-year. Amazon has also broadened its Same-Day Delivery category to include groceries alongside these essentials.

With all of this, Amazon says it shipped over 9 billion items next day or same-day to Prime customers in 2024 according to Amazon’s announcement today.

“Fast, free delivery with Prime changed customers’ expectations, and we aim to keep exceeding expectations and help members get more of what they need and want—at record speeds,” said Doug Herrington, CEO of Worldwide Amazon Stores.

The company also emphasizes the increasing value of its Prime membership program. Launched 20 years ago with a limited selection and two-day shipping, Prime now offers free delivery on over 300 million items across 35 categories, with tens of millions eligible for same or next-day delivery. Amazon points out that this represents a 20-fold increase in selection and a doubling of delivery speed compared to Prime’s initial offerings.

Beyond fast shipping, Amazon highlights a range of Prime benefits, including:

Amazon also highlights its recognition by Fortune magazine as one of the world’s most admired companies for the ninth consecutive year, citing its innovation and value for customers, employees, and communities.

The company provides information on how to sign up for Prime, offering monthly and annual subscription options, as well as a free 30-day trial for eligible customers. Amazon’s messaging focuses on the value proposition of Prime, emphasizing both cost savings and enhanced convenience for its members. The company’s focus on fast delivery, expanded selection, and a growing list of benefits aims to solidify Prime’s position in the increasingly competitive retail and streaming landscape.
