Amazon Publicly Denies Plans For An Free Ad-Supported Streaming Services

For months now we have heard that Amazon was working on an ad-supported streaming service. This was first reported by The Information who said the service would be called Free Drive and will include free ad-supported content. This is not new for Amazon as they have for some time offered free episodes of shows supported by ads. Amazon has also allowed people to make videos free on Prime Video with ads.

Later CNBC reported Amazon would launch the free streaming services in October 2018. Now Amazon is saying they have no plans to launch a free streaming service supported by ads. “…We have no plans to build an ad-supported Prime Video offering for free at this time,” said Amazon’s Director of Investor Relations according to a Seeking Alpha transcript.

This is not the first time Amazon has denied building a free ad-supported streaming service. In 2017 Amazon also denied any plans to build a free streaming service supported by ads. Now it is possible Amazon was working on services but has changed its mind. That often happens as companies test out ideas only to back away once they see the final product. For now, this move is good news for Roku, Tubi, Pluto TV, and Sony Crackle as this means one less competitor in the free with ads market.
