Amazon Prime Video Now Available on Oculus VR Headsets

The Amazon Prime Video app has launched on the Oculus Go, Samsung Gear VR, and Oculus Quest VR headsets, according to an announcement from Oculus.

VE headset users will be able to watch the entire Amazon Prime Video library of content, along with 10 new 360 degree videos, including the short film INVASION! and an immersive documentary called Greenland Melting.  Amazon says they will be coming out with more content designed specifically for VR headsets in the future.

Prime members have full access to all their Prime Video and VR content. And while non-Prime members can’t access VR-specific content, they can watch anything from their personal library in VR. You can even use voice powered search to make finding and playing your favorite content even easier.

There are reports about Amazon considering VR technology going back to 2016. At that point, the company had a job posting that read “Amazon Studios has an opening for an experienced content development executive to help develop innovative mixed reality experiences for distribution on Amazon Video.” Before that, in March 2016, Amazon was also looking for developers of VR apps.

The Oculus Store already includes apps from Netflix, Hulu, Sling TV, Pluto TV, Fox Now, ESPN, Showtime, Facebook Watch, Newsy and Redbull TV. YouTube has created content specifically for VR, and Amazon Prime Video seems to be following.
