Amazon Prime Blames Writers Strike After Canceling Popular Show After a Single Season

Amazon reversed course and pulled the plug on the hit series A League of a Their Own after just one season. In March, the company confirmed a second season for the show, but now Prime Video said it is concluding on its streaming service with a single hitter.

Show creators and talents took to Instagram to express their disappointment, both for the end of the show and blaming the writers’ strike as the cause.

“What luck I have had to get to tell these stories and play this character I love so much. What a rare thing in life. And so I am sad today. To blame this cancellation on the strike, (which is an essential fight for fair wages, protections and working conditions, etc…) is bullsh*t and cowardly,” co-creator Abbi Jacobson posted on Instagram.

The series, based on the 1992 film, was scheduled to end with a four-episode final season. At the time, the deal hadn’t been completed. The show is a modernized version of the film, co-created by Jacobson and Will Graham in 2022.

Starring Jacobson, D’Arcy Carden, Chante Adams, Melanie Field, and Kate Berlant, the first season touched on themes of identity, sexuality, and racism surrounding the All American Girls Professional Baseball League during WWII.

“This was not anything we expected and feels particularly devastating and ‘cowardly’ given the state of the world for POCs (people of color) and LGBTQ+ individuals,” said Desta Tedros Reff, one of the writers of the series.

Its first season gained positive reviews and recognition from GLAAD as an outstanding new television series. The show also won the Independent Spirit Award, the NAACP Award, the Critics Choice Association, and the National Visibility Award from the Human Rights Campaign.

While Prime Video won’t be bringing the team back to bat, Sony plans to search for another outlet to showcase the final season, according to The Wrap.
