Now Amazon is not powering everything Netflix is doing as Yury Izrailevsky, Netflix’s VP of cloud and platform engineering, told Ars Technica: “All the search, personalization, all the business logic, all the data processing that enables the streaming experience, the 100 different applications and services that make up the streaming application, they live in AWS.”
This move is part of a larger plan to develop Netflix to the next level with $800 million being spent in 2016 on tech and development projects. This is on top of the $651 million Netflix spent on the same issues in 2015. However, not all of that will go to Amazon, and this move in the long run is expected to save Netflix money over running their own data centers.
In what is just one more sign of how tightly woven many tech companies are Google will also be getting a piece of this Netflix deal because everything that is kept in Amazon’s AWS is backed up in the Google cloud storage system.
There is one interesting bit to this… Netflix has decided not to move their DVD business over to Amazon and will still host their DVD-related data centers. This may be a sign of what Netflix sees as their future.
Hopefully in the long run this move will lower Netflix costs and improve down time. In the end that will mean more for the consumer by allowing Netflix to spend more on content and lower down time.
