Amazon Mistakenly Blocks The Ability to Sideload Apps On Some Fire TVs

fire tv stick

For years there have been rumors that Amazon would block the ability to sideload apps on the Fire TV. These rumors have recently grown in popularity as some Fire TV owners found themselves unable to sideload apps.

Recently, AFTVnews reported that some Fire TV owners are starting to see an error message when they try to sideload an app not in the official fire TV app store. When they tried to sideload the app they saw this message “Unauthorized apk installation detected. Please do not install performance benchmark apk without permission from deviceprot@amazon.com.”

Now, AFTVnews has confirmed with Amazon that this is a glitch caused by Amazon’s internal benchmarking app. Amazon has promised an update that will fix this issue so affected Fire TV owners can once again sideload apps. Amazon has not announced when this update will roll out to affected Fire TVs, but hopefully, it will happen soon.
