Amazon May Have Just Discontinued the 2nd Gen Fire TV

Recently we learned that Amazon had not one but two new Fire TV devices launching soon. Now it looks as though Amazon has discontinued the Fire TV as it gets ready for the new Fire TV to launch.

Yesterday the 2nd generation Fire TV box went out of stock on Amazon with no return date listed. Later in the day Amazon removed the 2nd gen Fire TV box from its family of Fire TV devices. Now you only see the 2nd gen Fire Stick and Fire TV edition smart TVs.

It looks like Amazon has quietly cleared out stock of the current 2nd gen Fire TV. Amazon historically tries to clear out the stock of its devices before it launches a new upgraded version. Now it looks like we are just a few days, or maybe weeks at most before a new Fire TV hits the market.

Box stores may still have some 2nd gen Fire TVs in stock for a few more weeks; however, when their stock runs out they likely won’t be restocking the older model.

So far we know both new Fire TV devices will offer 4K HDR support. One will offer 60 frames per second and the other one will offer 30 frames per second. It sounds like Amazon plans to roll out a mid-range device on top of replacing the current high-end Fire TV.

Keep your eyes on Amazon next week. It would not be unprecedented for Amazon to drop a new device close to the new Apple TV announcement on Tuesday to steal some of the thunder from Apple.
