Update: Amazon has followed up to say that the Fire TV Cube first-gen is the same as the second-gen Fire TV Cube just with a new remote. Because of the updated remote Amazon considered this a second-gen Fire TV Cube. So while there are two models of the same Fire TV Cube with different remotes.

Many had been hoping for a new Fire TV Cube as the current model is underpowered compared to the Fire TV Stick 4K. On paper, the Fire TV Cube is more than powerful enough but the combination of powering both the built-in Echo Dot and the Fire TV leaves it slightly slower than the cheaper Fire TV Stick 4K.
