Amazon Is Working On An OTA DVR For The Fire TV

There has been rumors of a possible Amazon DVR option for their Fire TVs. According to sources who spoke with Bloomberg, Amazon is hard at work on a DVR for the Fire TV and smartphones.

From the sounds of it, the DVR will work like a Tablo or an HDHomeRun. With this new DVR you will be able to plug in an antenna to a device that will stream it out to your Fire TV or smartphone. (No word on if it will support other devices at this time.) Amazon already has OTA support built into their Fire TV for the Fire TV smart TVs. This OTA support has almost everything needed minus the physical device to record OTA TV.

According to the sources that talked to Bloomberg, while the device is in development Amazon has yet to decide if they want to release it. The DVR is being built by Amazon’s Lab 126, the same group that built the Echo speaker and is said to be working on a home robot known as Project Vesta.

The question now for Amazon is: Is there a large enough market to take on the TiVo, Tablo, and Channel master DVRs that are already available?
