Amazon is reportedly looking to build up its streaming presence in India by buying the streaming service MX Player according to TechCrunch.

Currently, Time Internet owns MX Player after buying it for $140 million in 2018. In 2019 MX Player relaunched as a streaming service and claims to have 300 million users, with 200 million of them in India.

Amazon already has a free streaming service called miniTV in India. Now it looks like Amazon wants to expand into a paid service to help it compete with Disney in India.

Right now, Disney’s Hotstar brand has a huge market in South East Asia. Its reported that Hotstar has about 57.5 million paid subscribers.

Netflix has also done well in India, with 1.79 million paid subscribers in the area.

Paramount is also reportedly looking to relaunch Paramount+ in India.

Right now, India’s population is about 1.4 billion. It has also been seeing strong growth in the world of streaming as many are now looking to streaming for how they watch their favorite programs.

If Amazon can even get 10% of Indians to subscribe, that would be 140 million subscribers. With numbers like that, you can understand why streaming services are targeting India for major expansion.
