In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly Jennifer Salke, the head of Amazon Studio, said, “I’d never say ‘never’ but that version is not something we’re doing. We’ll use our own testing barometers and some user data but the public voting process has been set aside for now.”
One of the most successful Amazon pilots was Man in the High Castle, but Amazon said user feedback was only part of why shows were picked up.
One of the main reasons to end the pilot program is an effort to speed up the rollout of new original programming. Amazon’s CEO Jeff Bezos has reportedly been pushing for more original content as he hopes to find Amazon’s Game of Thrones. By dropping the pilot episodes, they can rapidly speed the rate they release new shows.
Amazon is hoping to find a hit show like The Handmaid’s Tale that will drive people to subscribe to Amazon if for nothing more than that show. Next month Amazon is releasing a new show based on the Tom Clancy books called Jack Ryan. Amazon is pushing hard hoping this show will be their next big show.
