Amazon is gearing up to add live linear TV to its Prime Video lineup.
Tech blog Protocol first found job listings that laid out plans for adding live programming, including one from LinkedIn which says “We are seeking an experienced Product Manager for the Prime Video Linear TV team to redefine how customers watch 24/7 linear broadcast TV content.”
Protocol talked to an anonymous insider who said that Amazon is “actively pursuing” deals that would bring live programming to the platform.
Back in January, we reported that Amazon had been looking into the idea of launching a live TV streaming service, with many hoping that Amazon would buy PlayStation Vue when it went up for sale.
At that time, Amazon had opted to focus on Amazon Channels and continue building the collection of content available for free for Amazon Prime customers.
Bringing live video to viewers wouldn’t be an entirely new concept for Amazon. The company made a deal with the NFL to stream Thursday Night Football and the partnership was a huge success for Amazon.
Along with individual events, it looks like Amazon is interested in have live 24/7 feeds. Protocol shared a line from one job listing that says “Linear TV enables customers to watch 24/7 streams of their favorite TV stations airing programs including sports, news, movies, award shows, special events and TV shows.”
When live TV launches on Amazon, it will likely look similar to the lineups on The Roku Channel and Pluto TV. However, with a source saying “You should assume they’re talking to everybody,” Amazon could be planning to take on some of the paid services.
