Amazon Is in Talks to Buy The Yes Sports Network

For some time now, we have heard about Amazon’s plans to get into sports. Amazon has recently purchased the rights to NFL Thursday Night Football and other sporting events. Now it looks like Amazon wants to get into 24/7 sports networks.

As part of the deal to get Department of Justice approval for the Disney and FOX merger, there was a requirement that the FOX Regional Sports Networks (RSNs) would be sold off. According to the deal, when Disney closes on the sale of most of 21st Century Fox they would sell off the regional sports networks currently running under the FOX Sports name. There was a fear that Disney owning ESPN, ABC, and the FOX regional sports networks would give them too much power in the world of sports.

Earlier we learned that Amazon planned on buying some of the FOX Sports Networks from Disney. Now we learned that Yes Network is the network Amazon hopes to buy. This all comes from a Deadline report: Amazon and Sinclair are the main bidders for Yes Network.

FOX RSNs and Yes Network air 44 professional teams including teams from the MLB, NBA, and NHL. For now, it looks like Amazon is focusing on Yes Network, but that does not mean Amazon couldn’t buy other RSNs.

The companies that buy FOX’s RSNs will have great power over the future of streaming sports.
